2 years ago I had gotten a HP ENVY h8-1427 Desktop PC. And just recently I had replaced the case, CPU, PSU and GPU. I took it to a shop to get my stuff installed (since I don't trust my self building my own computer). They put everything in and since the motherboard and cpu didn't match with the hard drive they had to reinstall windows 8 on the computer. Now 30 days after im getting a message saying "your windows license will expire soon". So i called windows said my situation. They told me to phone HP. He gave me a phone number i phoned. I told them my story and the last guy I talked to said that they could give me a windows 8 key but i needed a disc. He knew i didn't have a disc so he transferred me to someone else who said they would phone me back but of course never did. So i called microsoft to ask if i could just buy another damn key and they said i couldn't unless i had a disc. So he told him to look on my case for the windows 8 key. i kept telling him it was pre installed and i knew there wasn't a code there but he kept insisting there was. after saying okay he told me to go to HP. i called HP again which directed me back to microsoft. I am tired of this and this is obviously going no where. is there anyway i can get a damn key?!?!?!?

If you contact HP with your original purchase information, especially if you registered your product with them at the beginning, and explain you had a hardware change due to a component failure, HP should provide you with a replacement product key. They are supposed to per Microsoft's vendor agreements so long as you are not beyond the covered period. I believe it's three years but I could be mistaken. It's worth a shot. Or as previously said you can in the worst case buy the OS key. I think it's only 69.00 if you go into control panel, system and click on the activate link or change product key or whatever yours says. Seems like it's something different on every system but it should be right there to the right. It will take you to MS...

With Windows 8 OEM PCs the license key that is required to activate the operating system is stored on the motherboard. If you replace the motherboard, you have to get a new license. As damric stated above, a new copy of windows 8 is about $100 (for standard edition). I assume that this is a home computer, so it does not need to join a Windows Domain and that you do not want to use the BitLocker disk encryption system.

If this is the case, the standard edition of Windows 8 will work fine. All you should have to do is get an OEM edition of Windows 8 from NewEgg, Amazon, or another reseller and type in the license code into your system and then tell it to activate. If you have trouble making this work after you get a new Windows 8 license, you can call Microsoft and they will talk you through it.

Hang on...I take back what I said earlier.

The shop you took it too screwed up when hey installed the OS. Not HP.
If that motherboard was a replacement for a broken one, then maybe/probably a reactivation of your original key is in order.

But just for 'new stuff'....no, you need a whole new license. And the shop should have told you that.
