Ive been thinking of the gigabyte for a long time and i really think its a great card but there is other choices and my big question is should i get an XFX and overclock it or should i fork out a bit more money for a more quality card that has a higher base clock?

Solution
The GPU chip in all R9 280X cards are the same. The only difference is the PCB and cooler. Asus uses their DirectCU II cooler; MSI uses their Twin Frozr cooler; Gigabyte uses their 3x Windforce cooler; XFX uses their Double Dissipation cooler; Sapphire, which is left out, uses their Vapor-X, Dual-X, or Tri-X (Toxic) cooler; HIS, also left out, uses their IceQ X cooler; and Club3D, also left out, uses their royalKing cooler.

The best price/performance/temperature is Sapphire, followed by Gigabyte, and Asus.
The quietest one is Asus, followed by HIS, and Gigabyte.
The coolest one is HIS, followed by Sapphire Toxic, and Gigabyte.

Unfortunately, although HIS performs well at providing a very cool and quiet cooler, their performance drop...

Gigabyte this time around is garbage. The best of the r9 series is sapphire Tri-X or vapor X and powercolor PCS+. All the others run really hot. XFX is garbage these days. asus is pretty good and msi is pretty good.

From preference perspective this is the order: Sapphire, MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte, XFX. Before choosing any card do read its review and see benchmarks for better understanding.

For R9 280X my recommendation is Sapphire Vapor-X. All cards run hot. Sapphire has introduced Vapour chamber tech in HSF which produces excellent cooling results. If Vapor-X is not in budget then get Dual-X from Sapphire.

Unfortunately, although HIS performs well at providing a very cool and quiet cooler, their performance drop is not worth the slight advantage. Their cooler is only 2-3C cooler than Sapphire and about 1 dbA louder than Asus, while being about 1 dbA quieter than Gigabyte. All of those can be marked down due to margin of error.

Based on that, I'll let you choose the one you want based on what stat is most important to you.

I am telling you.. do not get gigabyte this time around. I do have experience, I had the gigabyte and it failed and had to be returned to amazon. I have sapphire now. just look at the reviews for the gigabyte one.. its shit.
