Trying to optimize my Samsung 840 Pro on sata II, is this the best that I can get?

I have an older x58 board and some time ago decided to pick up an 128GB Samsung 840 Pro because I wanted the warranty on it even though I was aware of the sata II limitation. I also have an additional storage raid1 (made up of 2 hdd's) setup in my bios (ICH chipset) so I needed to select "configure sata as RAID" in the bios...apparently Samsung Magician doesn't recognize the sata interface in this mode and still says that "AHCI mode is required for best performance." The SSD is not apart of the raid, it's just the OS drive. I've tried setting setting the sata mode in AHCI with my current setup before and Win7 instantly bsod's during bootup.

Here are my other settings in Magician:

  • latest firmware
hibernation mode disabled (to save space and not needed)
virtual memory set to 2GB (I have 6GB of ram, DDR3-1600, tested with memtest86+)
    indexing search enabled
    prefetch disabled
    write cache buffer enabled
    write cache buffer flushing enabled
    system restore disabled
    over provisioning at 10% (12GB)
    rapid mode enabled

With all of this, I'm getting 180MB/s seq read and 176MB/s seq write with 20,000-30,000 IOPS. I already wrote about 3TB before enabling over-provisioning. Is this the best I can get with my setup? Should I dismantle the raid1 and set sata back to AHCI for significant performance gains?

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately the available sata/chipset drivers haven't been updated in quite some time for my board. I'm assuming that "Intel Matrix Storage Manager" ≈ "Intel Rapid Storage." The manager console is showing the SSD as "generation 2" for the sata transfer mode.

Maybe there isn't anything I can do for this type of legacy hardware. Like I said, I could take down the array but that would probably mean I would have to reinstall the OS again and losing my raid for minimal performance gains, I don't I think I would want to (at least not without ghosting this ssd first.)

I've just installed the exact same drive on a h61 motherboard with no SATA 3 ports, SATA 2 only, however I do not have a RAID array set up on any drives. I have the EVO set up as my OS drive, and my WD Green 2TB drive as storage.

A couple of things to try:

See if you can enable any of the options in OS Optimisation, I currently have Max Performance selected.

See if you can activate RAPID mode.

I'm gonna run some more tests now (As the magician software is giving me really weird results like 3332MB/s sequential read) and will post here when done

All of my settings are custom (rapid mode also enabled) and I don't want Magician turning on things like hibernation and system restore because it considers that to be "max performance." That result you posted looks like a "normal" result if you have rapid mode enabled and Magician effectively using your ram as a "pseudo" ram disk. In my situation Magician probably isn't even utilizing my ram (even though it says so) and probably is reverting a "basic" sata interface.
