Home Set-Top Box rather than Cable Company/ISP Box?

I was wondering if it would be possible to buy a set-top box other than from my cable provider?

For instance, I know you can get your own modem and manage that, and a cable box is essentially just another networked device with a MAC address and coaxial cable to connect to the WAN side of things.

Has anyone experimented or explored about this?

Your cable provider is the only legal supplier of boxes for their system. Even if you could get a box they would not activate it for you. In the older non digital cable days there were bootleg illegal boxes but not with digital cable.
