I am working on a solution where around 50 people with tablets will be in a room and be able to communicate with each other using their tablets using a Wi-Fi router (not necessarily connected to internet). Once more than 20 tablets are connected, I see performance issue on the router and connection drops for few tablets. Is there a way to address this? (Like a suggestion for better router or connecting an access point). I am looking for a cost effective solution.

Your asking quite a bit from a WiFi router there. You may consider either an enterprise one (expensive) or perhaps linking 2-3 routers together with ethernet as a sort of small network with like 20 to each router. I've never tried that before but I would think it should work.

Sounds like you need a enterprise AP for something like that. You might look at Ubiquity, their AP's are solid not sure if they fall into your budget though.

Spectre's idea should work with a little elbow grease.

I agree with the Ubiquiti recommendation. If you just want one AP then get an enterprise one like the Ubiquiti Unifi AP. They have been tested with up to 100 connections without dropping clients.
