Thanks in advance

It depends on which direction you are going. dvi-d video card to a vga monitor, or vice-versa?

DVI, HDMI, and Displayport are digital. VGA (Dsub) is analog. The digital standards will yield better picture quality, though the exact amount of improvement depends on your cable and monitor.

Going from digital to analog is easy. Going from analog to digital (VGA output to DVI input) is harder, and will be more expensive. If your computer/video card doesn't have digital output, just stick with the monitor's VGA input. The monitor's internal electronics will convert the analog signal to the digital display - the same thing a VGA to DVI adapter would do.

The only way a VGA to DVI adapter would improve your picture is if your VGA cable were causing picture degredation (often happens with very long cables). In that case an adapter would help, but it would need to be located before the cable. i.e. the adapter needs to plug into the computer's VGA port, and you use a DVI cable to connect it to the monitor.

If your graphics card has VGA out, VGA to VGA is really the best way if the monitor will only take VGA in.

If your graphics card doesn't have VGA out, then here's an adapter.

Hello NeurAxaL,

You're going to need an "ACTIVE" DVI-D to VGA analog adapter.

Try this one from Amazon.

StarTech.com DVI2VGAE 1920x1200 DVI-D to VGA Active Adapter Converter Cable

Currently priced $25.50 plus shipping costs.

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-DVI2VGAE-1920x1200-A...

The reason why it has to be an "ACTIVE" and not a "PASSIVE" adapter is because DVI-D is a digital signal that must be converted to a VGA analog signal in order for your monitor to accept it. If your monitor already has a DVI-D input then you don't need this adapter and you would then use a straight DVI-D to DVI-D cable to connect it like this one.

Cables Unlimited 10-Feet DVI D M to M Cable

Currently $6.99 plus shipping cost.

http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimited-10-Feet-DVI-Cabl...

Also if your video card has a DVI-I connector on it then you can use a passive DVI-I to VGA adapter since the origin signal would be taken from the DVI-A connection (which is analog) from the DVI-I connector.

If you have a DVI-I connector, then I would get this one:

StarTech.com DVIVGAMFBK DVI to VGA Cable Adapter - Black - M/F

Choose the BLACK colored version which currently costs $7.18 plus shipping costs.

You would then connect this adapter's DVI-I male to the DVI-I female connector on the back of the graphics card which adapts it to a VGA female connector which you would then connect using a standard VGA male to male cable to the VGA input of your monitor.

Hope this helps.
