Hello all,

I recently installed a new heatsink on my cpu after being tired of my computer being loud, and I have acquired a new issue after doing so.

After leaving my computer on for 5 minutes, the screen goes black and the computer essentially freezes. I restart and the computer works fine for 5 minutes before freezing. I checked the GPU temp, and it only gets up to around 65 when gaming, which is what it was getting to before. The CPU stays at a solid 35-40, topping at 45 when under heavy load. I turned on some music and turned on the Diablo 3 menu (which is poorly optimized and runs the video card into a semi-heavy load) and came back to find a black screen and no music playing. The PSU and GPU are 2 years old, and the other parts are all 1 year old. Here are the parts in detail:

CPU: AMD FX 8350
GPU: Radeon HD 6850
RAM: 8 Gigs, brand forgotten.
PSU: Corsair 500W
Mobo: Gigabyte ATX

Another note I should make is that for some reason the CPU fan connector does not work with my new fan. I had to plug it into a system fan connector. To compensate for this, I went into the Bios and set up the fan to cool the computer more if the internal temperature increased.

Again, any help you can afford is appreciated.

Solution
Microcenter was a good choice; got a 750W Power Supply and put that bad boy in the system.

Booted it up and.... still got the error. So I went into my bios and reverted the fan change I had added.

FINAL SOLUTION: Getting a Black Screen? Been Messing with your Bios? Return it to defaults and see what happens.

Good Luck Have Fun,
-Trevor

you may want to try reapplying thermal paste. If you didn't change any settings, you may be heating up past the temp limit. Fast. at least try it and make sure the new cooler is very tight.

Also, system fans are none adjustable. If in a system fan header, you may want to set it to turbo. Also, make sure fan CPU fan is not backwards.

Ok, I have a cooler master heatsink that is blowing THROUGH the body of the heatsink, out the back of the case. Is this correct? Or should the fan be on the other side of the heatsink, simply blowing air off of the body?

Also, my temps according to Bios and Speedfan are staying around 35-45, tops.

I've heard that my video card is notorious for black screens, so that might be a problem.
Also, I ran the specs of my system through a wattage test, and it reported that I needed at least 550W to power everything. So I think I am going to grab a new PSU tonight and see how it fairs, and if there is no change, start checking the CPU. Because getting the heatsink on that thing is a pain in the butt.
