First off, specs:
Asus N53SN Laptop
Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium
2nd gen Intel i7
NVidia GeForce GT550M

So this whole thing started off with a disconnected fan. The internal fan of my laptop apparently got disconnected a few days ago and my games started to play on-and-off laggy. I didn't feel much air coming out of the laptop's exhaust so I had it cleaned to see if that would fix the problem. It didn't and there was still very little air coming out of the exhaust so that's when I realized that the fan wasn't working and had the fan fixed at a computer repair shop. They told me it had just gotten disconnected. After getting the fan fixed, I could finally feel a lotta' hot air coming out of the exhaust when I ran process-intensive applications like watching HD video or running Folding@home, but whenever I started a game, it would hang at the startup of the game, something which did not happen before I had the fan fixed. I tried installing to the latest graphics driver but it continually failed. I tried installing other graphics drivers and they still failed. I checked the device manager before and after some of the later attempts at updating the graphics driver, and I found that the GPU was detected before trying to install the drivers, but couldn't be detected after trying and failing to install them. Restarting the computer always allowed it to be detected again.

My guess is that my GPU just stops functioning or gets disconnected immediately WHEN IT IS SUPPOSED TO START FUNCTIONING, but I'm no computer expert so I'm seeking advice on what to do or what the cause could be. I will be sending it to the same repair shop a couple of days from now too.

Solution
It seems to me like your laptop was dropped or shaken , so the connectors got unplugged, whatever the cause is , your GPU is being detected and that's as good thing , ( it seems they might have troubled wires and other pins ) , send it to a reliable repair shop.
