I have an FX-8350 and an R9 280 (non x). Does it make sense to overclock the CPU, or will the GPU hold it back? I'm looking to get more fps in games like Crysis 3 and BF4.

I will be overclocking the 280 as well, but I hear it doesn't overclock very much. I don't want to go through all the trouble of overclocking the CPU if it's not going to give me much in return, as it will be my first time overclocking, and I'm on air (CM Hyper 212 Evo).

Yes do OC the FX. You won't get too much as both are fairly strong but you do need to OC the FX in order to get good performance from it. Your GPU is better than your CPU.

The CPU will never bottleneck the R9 280, even if overclocked.

Overclocking CPU's don't usually give large increases in performance for games, unless they are very CPU dependent. But most of the time, to get better FPS, you need to overclock or upgrade the GPU.
