Is overclocking worth it when purely gaming?

I am currently picking a processor for my pc and have narrowed it down to the it 4690/k

I say /k because I am just not entirely sure of the benefits of overclocking for me. I have seen videos and benchmarks where the difference in fps was very minimal usually only 5-10 frames of difference, and I only need 60fps locked anyway.

If I go for the overclockable 4690 then I will also have to get a motherboard that allows this meaning and increase of £50 in my budget or more. Right now it doesn't seem worth it.

Any thoughts?

Pretty much spot on. There's nothing inherently wrong or right about overclocking, it's just more of a personal preference. Since you're going the Intel route on your CPU & board, if you don't plan on overclocking your system then there's no point in buying an unlocked CPU or buying a board designed for overclocking.

So yeah, save the money either for future upgrades or to improve something else in your build (better GPU, SSD, etc.).

Having the ability to overclock does help to relieve any form of a bottleneck in the future if you decide to upgrade to a new graphics card a few years down in the future.

There are some games that still do benefit from a cpu overclock. You can still get a few extra frames from overclocking the CPU. It might or might not be needed. If games are more cpu reliant the extra overclock could help a bit to get to that 60fps in a game if that's the goal.

10 fps matters when you are getting 30 fps in games so by ocing u can get 10 fps more which is a noticeable difference but at 60 fps if u oc and get 70 fps then there is no noticeable difference other than the increase of fps on the screen..and if u are not comfortable with oc then just buy the 4690 its a great processor and one more thing if oc is not done properly it can permanently damage the cpu...
