Ello all. Hopefully you will be able to help me with this question. it is starting to drive me crazy but i know it is close to fixin.

i have an odd issue going on and i think it may be a winxp pro issue. We have installed a new HP 8600 office jet pro on a local machine. I have set it to share over the network. I have 8 pc's all running winxp pro. All machines can ping the printer just fine and even access the built in web page via typing in the private ip in the browser.

Here is where the issue starts. 3 of the machines, can actually add the printer as a network printer.

Control panle>add printer>browse for printer>workgroup>hp8600

It works great on 3 of the machines. they can see the hp8600 listed under workgroup, however, the other ones do not see it at all but yet can ping it AND access the web server. I try to use the other option of adding it via a URL and still no go. I do not have a domain here, just a simple home network.

After checking the arp table, it does show the correct MAC address matching the printer IP. So i know that all layer 1-3 is working correctly.

the firewall is set to allow file and print sharing. And if 3 of the 8 machines can add the printer and see it under the workgroup name, then i know it is something else i am missing.

Any ideas of where to go would be awesome. Thanks much

Have you tried setting them up by the IP address of the printer instead of workgroup sharing?

not that i know of unless you mean under the add printer wizzard when it asks for "connect to this printer" and has a place to type in something such as \\server\printer

i have tried entering in ip but maybe my syntax is wrong.

never mind. i figured it out. i just installed it using a printer port that connected to the ip of the printer. thanks for the heads up with that idea.
