Good Evening All,

Hi All!

I’m hoping one of you could kindly assist in helping to resolve my PC issue!

Back in April, I purchased the components to build a PC for myself, which until 3 weeks ago had been running smoothly – so it had been fine for 3 months.

What happened was:

+ I was on my PC when unexpectedly the PC restarted. When it powered back on, the BIOS reported: NEW CPU INSTALLED! To confirm, I hadn’t just installed a new CPU! So I went ahead and pressed F1 on the keyboard and saved changes in the BIOS (as instructed).

After Windows launched, I reviewed the event logs - which confirmed an unexpected restart. Unfortunately there was no crash dumps.

+ About an hour or so later, it restarted again. This time there was no BIOS message (RE: NEW CPU). Again, no crash dumps, just an unexpected restart reported in the event logs.

+ A little later that day, the PC powered completely off, i.e. it hadn’t restarted. When I went ahead and pushed the power button, nothing happened, i.e. the PC didn’t power on. So I left my PC powered off for 5 minutes and tried again. Success, it powered on.

Based on that information, I thought OK – maybe I’m suffering with a component overheating. But I thought this couldn’t be the case as: 1) it had been fine for 3 months beforehand, and 2) I had been monitoring the temperature since I built it and the temperature had ranged from 31*C to 40*C across all components. Unless I’m mistaken, this is fine.

(Approximately) Around the time this issue occurred, I had updated the BIOS, Chipset etc. But I’m not 100% sure of the order - it may have even occurred afterwards, as I attempted to find a resolution - I can't remember sadly!

Sadly, this same series of events has occurred a few times over this past 3 weeks. Sometimes it doesn’t play out exactly the same way, but each time it’s a combination of the above!

This weekend I plan to follow all the steps listed here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems.

However, I wondered if anyone could shed any insight, or would have an idea as to what's going on? I have tried searching for similar issues, but nothing quite matches my exact problem.

Many Thanks!

For those that stumble across this thread because they have a similar issue.

I eventually resolved this issue - well, I believe it's resolved - by rebuilding the PC from scratch. I took out all components and then put them back in one by one, ensuring everything was cleaned (i.e. no dust, reapplying thermal paste etc). I also removed all USB devices that I no longer required (like an XBOX 360 wired controller) and ensured that no USB 2.0 device was plugged into a USB 3.0 port. Odd to think that could help - but at this point, anything was worth a shot.

It has been 2 weeks without a restart. Fingers crossed.
