I am kind of short of money at the moment and i need to upgrade my cpu from my current i3 540.
i have been planning to get the 4150 but the the i5 4570 looks like it will handle newer games better.. What is the difference between these cpus? How will my pc improve from my current cpu? (My gpu is an hd 5770 and i will upgrade that along the line as well)

Solution
Intel has three lines of consumer processors. The i3, i5 and i7. The i3 is designed for typical PC use, such as web surfing, Facebook, Office, etc. The i7 is a power chip for advanced work such as video editing, transcoding, etc. The i5 is the mid range chip that gets the best of both worlds. In other words, the i3 is not even designed for gaming.

Get the i5, it has 4 cores and 4 threads. The i3 is a dual core chip. It is hyper threaded, but the limited resources and processing power of the two cores makes the HT not nearly as effective than with the i7. Get the i5 and you will be good for years to come!

Will the i5 reduce lag in games despite the old gpu?

Yes, it will reduce SOME lag. But games are mostly GPU bound. So with a high end GPU, the i5 will be smooth as butter!

How will the r9 270 do?
Will my 550 watt psu be enough for it?

The PSU is enough for the r9-270. The 270x only requires a 500 watt. You should be able to game on full 1080p HD on Ultra and High settings with the anti-aliasing disabled. That card is not designed for anti-aliasing. Other than that, you should get 60 fps in most titles on ultra and high settings in 1080p with that GPU. Older titles you will get 60 easy. Newer titles may need the texture reduced or a mix of high and ultra settings (with AA off), for 60+ fps.

But for your budget it is a very capable rig! Enjoy it!

Happy Gaming!

Newer processors run with 1.5 volt RAM ideally .

The sticks you have are bound to be rated higher than that and will stress the memory controller on the processor

check the model number and find out what voltage it is rated to operate at

You will be able to use it if its rated 1.65 volt , but you will also be voiding the processors warranty if you use it

Higher voltages ..........no way

According to the kingston site all ddr3 ram are 1.5 volt :ange:

Im sure it is NOW , but 4 -5 years ago when that old pc was new some of it would have been 1.8 volts
