So I bought a new MOBO its the MSI FXA990 gd-80. It now wont boot with windows xp. I have also bought a copy of windows 8.1 and instead of booting from the HDD I am now trying to update my OS in order to see if it will boot from that. As I update my OS it stops on "getting started" after the initial updating restart. Any tips on how to get this to work? What to do first?

I would create a new partition on your hard drive, install win 8 on it, then back up the xp stuff you need onto your win8 partition. When you are done, format the old xp partition and extend it to your win 8.

definatly won't boot to the old OS. Old OS is loaded with hardware drivers for your old motherboard.
