Hey guys, I have a question for you, I currently have a 4770k Core i7 with a HD 6850, I want to upgrade to something capable of 1080p gaming + all on ultra settings with good FPS.

Choices are AMD Radeon R9 290x or nVidia GTX 770.

I know that R9 is far superior to GTX 770, but is the extra money worth it? Can GTX 770 handle 1080p gaming with decent FPS?

Thanks! :)

Well another thing to remember is that you can always buy another 770 later for SLI. Plus they will probably be cheaper by then.
I have a GTX 770. It's a good card and It runs most games on Ultra settings at 1080p. The R9 290x is a whole lot faster and it's meant to be ran on higher resolutions.

I suggest an R9 290 Because it's not too far off of the GTX 770's price. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125505&cm_re=R9_290-_-14-125-505-_-Product

Here is a good deal on the R9 280x http://www.ncixus.com/products/?usaffiliateid=1000031504&sku=99346&vpn=900652&manufacture=VISIONTEK

The R9 280X competes with the GTX 770 performance wise.

I don't think you'd need anything more than the 770 at 1080p. But the 290X may carry you a bit longer before an upgrade again is necessary if game developers keep raising the ante.

As you can see (at 1080p), it is not going to make much difference whether your frame rate is in the 70s or 80s. Both are faster than the avg. 60 HZ monitor can refresh the screen.

Thanks for your reply guys, like clutchc said, I would like to have a futureproof GPU so I don't have to change the GPU for a long time (5~ years maybe?)

Also having a R9 290x gives me the posibility to buy a second monitor and have both running?

You mean, buy GTX 770 now, and some years later buy another GTX 770? Wouldn't I need another PSU?

Also I found Googling that 2gb vram is low for future games, so that is a +1 to the R9 290x.

Needing another PSU is dependent on your current PSU, which I didn't see in your OP. I have 2 R9 280X in CF with a 4770k, and this system sucks around 750 watts max, and the 280X is a very power hungry card compared to a 770. In regards to VRAM: If you plan to be playing lots of ultra high texture games then consider the R9 290: It is faster than the 770 and has more VRAM, while still being Hawaii based and cheaper than the 290X

You should get the 4GB version if you want sli. I had SLI GTX 470's all the way up to this year. The cards had plenty of horsepower but were held back by their 1.25GB of vRAM in the most demanding games. Depending on how long you keep the SLI configuration of GTX 770 2GB you might be held back by the 2GB just as I was held back with my 1.25GB of vram.

Hmmm if I have 2GB GPU's and put them in SLI, wouldn't I have 4GB in total? :s

Technically you are using 4GB in SLI but the vRAM on each card has to have the same data on both cards. So it's pretty much the same as having 2GB.
