Hey guys , so today I was starting my pc build and I got to the point of the processor installation , I dropped the CPU in from a very low height and had to apply no pressure whatsoever to get it in , even pulling down the lever had near no resistance . I proceeded to clip on the heatsink and fan and locked the fan into place. But while doing so , I heard a fairly quiet low grinding noise , and the heatsink lock thingy took quite a bit of pressure to push down. I was installing a FX 8320 into a asus m5a97 evo r2.0. Is this normal , or did I mess something up?:(  Thanks in advance.

EDIT: The heatsink and fan doesn't move when I gently twist it and feels very firmly in place

More about : break cpu

Try taking the heatsink and CPU out to see if you bent any pins.

Could pins still bend even though it dropped in perfectly fine and the lock went down fine with no resistance?

Well, if you heard a grinding noise, then something may have happened to the processor. Better check.

Okay , will do. Out of interest ,what would happen if I booted the pc now? Would it completely break?

If the processor's damaged, then nothing would happen :D  But let's hope that's not the case.
