Ok so I just purchased the Radeon r9 290 DirectCU II and a corsair CS650M to go with it. When I went to plug up the gpu, there was 2 plugs on it. 6pin and 8pin. Do I need to plug into both of these? Because I think the psu only had 2 6pin connectors, and two small 2 pin connectors available. The gpu did come with a small cable that has an 8pin on one side, and 2 6pins on the other. Seems like an adapter cable. When I plugged up with the 6 pin, there was a green light over it but a red light over the 8pin. And when I used the adapter that came with the gpu to connect to the 8pin, the 8pin pin lit up green but the 6pin lit up red. Pcpartpicker didn't pop up with any incompatibilities so I wasn't expecting to run into this.

Is the red light an issue? If not, which one is better to plug into, the 8pin through the adapter or directly through the 6pin?

Solution
You need both the 8 and 6 pin plugged together on the gpu.

The 6 pin with the two pin hanging off can be combined to make a 8 pin PCIE cable. The 8 pin cable which can be taken apart form two 4 pin are for your ATX power cable near the cpu. Consult your motherboard manual, there should be a guide on inside that part.

This 6+2 pin PCIE cable is for your gpu 8 pin slot. It is designed to accommodate 6 pin or 8 pin.

when combined it will form this:

I have the cpu plugged up with the 8 (4) pin, that was a completely separate wire, not to mention it was labeled cpu so it was a no brainer. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the cable for the gpu had 2 of the 2pins hanging off of it. Does it matter which one I use? And does it matter which 6pin I connect it to?

Alright thanks. Unfortunately, I was only able to flip the switch real quick and had to run out for work. I'll post back if I can't figure it out with your directions. I really appreciate it.
