Ok, so here is where I started off:
I have seen similar posts on this but nothing that seems to "fit" my issue so I apologize if this is redundant.
I have a WD800BEVS that was once an external drive. Somewhere between TSA and I have no idea, the drive crashed. Since this was my backup drive (I know someone will ask why I didn't back up the drive ;) ) I am more than interested in getting the files off the drive.
I have a USB adapter that reads other drives quite well, just not the 80G one I am trying to recover. It does not show up in the "My Computer" list nor in disk management. The best I have been able to get is "USB Drive" under the "safely remove hardware".
I had purchased an identical drive to see if swapping the PCB would help and it didn't.
The heads park just fine but it does do the search thing when spinning up.
I had tried using PhotoRec which seemed to be finding files (though as of right now I'm not sure exactly how I got it to see the drive) but never saved them to the destination file on a different drive. The software also seemed to shut down after about an hour. I am told the program can run for a lot longer when finding large amounts of data.
Since it is about 40G of information, I really don't want to get soaked for data recovery.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the response!
For clarity, the reason I know it is 40G of info isn't because the software told me. I just happen to know what I had on the drive at the time of its demise.
Can you recommend other software or at least which ones to avoid?

You could try Testdisk for to recover your files from that external drive and save the files you retrieved to another healthy drive. If data recovery applications wont be able to give you any success then better send off the drive to a professional data recovery facility. If that data is irreplaceable try to consult WeRecoverData.com as they might have better techniques and experience on how to bring your important files back to life.
