Hello all,

I have been using my self built desktop for the last 6 years without any trouble however it has been giving me issues for the last few weeks.

The first problem was it would power on but not post, the fans would remain spinning at 100% for some reason. Some times it would power up for a few seconds and then power itself off before powering back on again. Finally after maybe a few rounds of this it would decide to turn on.

I eventually took everything apart and gave it a clean, replaced the thermal paste and reassembled the whole machine, still had the same problem. When I was able to log in, I updated all the drivers and ran memtest, memtest ran for 18hours on both ram sticks with no errors.

I finally installed Windows 7 quietly hoping there may be a fix, no dice. However, did notice something. I booted up using only one of the ram sticks, the machine would boot (more successfully) if used in certain slots, other slots wouldn't even post; this was tried with both sticks one at a time with similar results. However, when I use both ram sticks together (placed in slots they previously worked individually) then there is a 90% chance the computer will post but Windows will still not load for some reason.

I would appreciate any help from knowledgeable members asap as my work is starting to build up.

System specs fyi (all stock setting):
Motherboard - Asus P5Q PRO
CPU - Intel Q9550
GPU - XFX Radeon HD 4870
RAM - Corsair Dominator 1066Mhz (2gb*2)
HDD1 - Western Digital Black 640gb
HDD2 - Western Digital Black 1TB

Many thanks

Thanks for the reply.

Only way I can get it to boot is by repeatedly restarting the machine using the power button.

Prior to Windows 7 I had Windows XP, this ran for about 6years flawlessly.
Right now I have Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit) installed.

Ram is in the correct slots, its can also be used in each slot individually.
I recently took all the components apart and gave it all a good clean.

Bios also has been reset.
I also just completed the bench test for the motherboard, everything was fine.

I just can't figure this one out.

Was the Windows 7 100% legit?

Test your ram with Memtest

Can you boot into Safe Mode (F8) and do a Repair or Restore?

Is your OS drive set as the primary boot drive in bios?

Pull out your OS drive and put it in another pc as a non boot drive. Run Checkdisk/repair on it. Run a virus scan on it.

Hello Calvin7,

What are the chances the battery may be at fault? I've not heard this one before.

The system clock within the bios is fine, so I'm thinking that may not be it (I took the battery out and reseated it after a minute to reset cmos too).

Thanks for the suggestions.

The problem started with Win XP, I thought upgrade to Win 7 may somehow solve it. Win 7 it retail bought by myself, 100% legit.

When it decides to post and boot successfully:

- Memtest always passes 3 rounds with no errors (recognises both sticks)
- Did a repair but problem still remains
- Yes the OS drive is set as primary
- I've run a scheduled chkdsl/r on OS drive, was clean
- Virus, Malawarebytes, Adware & CCleaner were all run and came back clean.

I've had this problem for a while and trial and errored what ever I could think of to pinpoint the problem with no joy. Do you have any other suggestions?

I followed that guide after I cleaned all the components and put it back together again.

There is one thing on that list which I haven't yet tried, which is to check the readings from the psu with the digital multimeter.

What do you think are the chances I may find a fault there?

Guess I'm gonna have to buy a digital multimeter during the weekend to test the psu, will let you know the results soon after.

I haven't got my digital multimeter yet, but for the time being I have used CPUID HWMonitor to give me some reading.

The first image is when the machine is idle and the next is 2 minutes in to the FurMark stress test.

Can someone please take a look and let me know how they fare against the expected output.

Thanks

Your 12V reading is way too low - 11.5V. Check it again in bios/uefi. If its still this low, then replace your power supply.

Also your cpu is too hot at 51C max core temp. Check the CPU temp in bios/uefi. and post back.

You've poseted the screenshot twice. Get rid of one.

Ok, now I've checked the bios readings on two separate occasions; the readings were as follows:

+3.3 = 3.328
+5 = 4.968
+12 = 12.040 - 12.096 (it goes up and down between either of those figures)

Does this make sense to anyone?

How long shall I use it for before checking? Couple of hours of regular use should be fine I guess before I check it. What do you think?

I'll have the temp from the bios up shortly.

Yep, all drivers are up to date.

After using the PC for a few hours (word processing, internet) I ran HW Info. Screen shots are as follows:

I still have no idea why the cpu temps are so high

Your cpu is running too fast at idle. http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_2/Intel-Core%202%20Quad%20Q9550%20EU80569PJ073N%20(BX80569Q9550).html

Your cpu voltage is a bit too high at 1.25V. Drop it by .05V. Your CPU temp is OK though 33C. Then repost with the cpu temp.

Your GPU is running a bit too hot. Your CPU voltage is a bit too high at

Your GPU voltage is also a bit high at 1.263V. Drop it by .05V as well. Or if it is overclocked, reset it to no overclock.
Also increase your gpu fan speed. It should be running at 2000rpm at least when your temp is 77C. Use Afterburner custom fan profile.

Sorry for the delay in my reply, I do appreciate the help.

In my bios, all of the options are set to auto, as seen here:

Shall I still proceed to adjusting it as you said?
Will I have to use Afterburner to make any changes to the GPU as I couldn't find anything in the BIOS?
