DDoS and DoS Threats

Hello I am a moderator on a minecraft server and I banned a kid for using x-Ray. After I banned him he wanted my skype do he can apologize. He managed to get my IP address from skype and spammed me with DDoS and DoS threats. Is there anyway I can change my IP address? I heard that shutting off my modem might work. Also, since I'm a moderator I have access to his IP address and know his ISP. Is there anything I can do with it to rat him out? (He wasn't on a vpn or proxy it is his actually his IP address) I doubt he will do anything with it but I just to be safe.

Most ISP will not do anything without a court order. You could try to report him to the police but they likely would do nothing unless you had proof he was threatening your life. The police would then have to get his name from the ISP and then go visit him, highly unlikely. You could file suit against him and the ISP but it will cost you lot in fees even if the lawyer does not charge. It will be along process because the only reason you sue the ISP is to get them to give you his name so you can file against him and have him served.

If you can change your IP really depends on your ISP and the technology. Pretty much if you get the IP via DHCP look and see what the time is on the lease. You could try to leave the router off that...

It is highly unlikely anyone can actually DoS you from a home connection. Since almost all have much less upload than download the person attempting the DoS will hit their upload limit way before they hit your download limit unless they are on google 1g fiber or something.

The only way to really DoS someone is to have access to a commercial connection ie from work or something but then you risk losing your job or you pay one of the many DoS services that have botnets to do this damage. Most people are not willing to fork over the money to DoS someone for very long. Pretty much you ignore it and it will go away.

I have verizon fios. Is it possible to call my ISP and ask them to change my IP address?

If you get the right person at verizon their tech support is pretty good. FIOS has those ONT boxes so I suspect if you wanted to do the unplug the modem overnight trick you would have to also pull the battery on the ONT. Only time I even messed with one of those I was helping someone get verizon to turn on the ethernet port so he could use a normal router rather than their coax one.
