Hey guys it is my first time trying to overclock my cpu. I have read guides and watched some videos, but they are very tough to follow, probably because my new MOBO has this new UEFI BIOS.

Specs:

CPU: AMD FX-8120 3.1GHz
GPU: AMD SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X R9 290 4GB
MOTHERBOARD: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3
PSU: CORSAIR 750w Bronze Edition
MEMORY: G.SKILL TRIDENT-X 2x4GB
HARDDRIVE: SAMSUNG EVO 840 250GB SSD

Do I need to download a program to overclock, or is it all done in the BIOS? The only thing I've attempted to do is Unlock my processor in the BIOS, and it didn't allow me to increase anything with the BIOS or AMD Overdrive. I am completely clueless about overclocking this thing.

Solution
No voltage change necessary if it is stable.

Stock:
Frequency 2800 MHz
Turbo frequency 3100 MHz (more than 4 cores), 3700 MHz (4 cores or less)

You may have to turn off Turbo too if you have issues. Because your Turbo freq increases as well.

You shouldn't have to 'unlock' anything in BIOS. Simply go to the BIOS/MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T.) section and change the CPU clock multiplier from auto to one step higher at a time. Test with a boot to Win and a prime95* run. (page 35 in your MB manual). Repeat until unstable, then back off to the last stable setting.

If you want to take it a step further, increase the vcore by a small amount and see if the last unstable multi increase is now stable. Maybe you can even go higher. It will depend on the CPU and the MB. Be sure to monitor temps while performing the increases.

* I like to use Intel Burn Test instead of prime95 for a quicker test. Then when I have the OC I want, run prime95 for a more thorough test.

I just turned it from Auto to 20.00 about 20 minutes ago which put the CPU at 4.00Ghz. Do I need to mess with the voltage or anything? Everything seems to be taken care of automatically. Speccy says that my CPU runs at 60 degrees celsius while playing BF4 on ULTRA settings. Is this all ok? Do I need to change anything else? I had no problems for the 20 minutes I was playing BF4 @ 4.00GHz.

If your non-turbo speed is up from 2.8GHZ to 4.0 GHZ, you may already be there.
