A lot of temporary files in XP are stored in hidden folders so start by opening up to see them by going into Windows Explorer or My Computer if you prefer.

From the Tools menu, choose Folder Options then click on the View tab. Scroll down and tick to Show all hidden files and folders then further down untick Hide protect system files and folders. Click Apply and OK your way out.

Back in Explorer, click no Documents and Settings then on your username. Look in App Data and delete anything in the Temp folder or any other folder relating to the programmes you use. Then do the same in Local Settings>App Data. Along the way you'll find the main Temp folder - empty that - and the Temporary Internet files.

Being lazy, I use two utilities to do this for me - one is ATF Cleaner from http://www.atribune.org and the other CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com. Both are free and I've never deleted anything other than rubbish by using them. I probably use both twice a day on customers' machine so I can say they are quite safe.
