Please help! after remounting my liquid cooling and applying new thermal paste (cleaned the old with q-tips) my lights and fans start for a split second and then turn off! I was hitting 80C at idle and believed it to be because a poor connection between the cooling and cpu but at least it was working and running smoothly but now it won't even start!
What's currently connected:
Gigabyte Z97 gaming 5 mobo
Intel 4790k (Devil's Canyon)
16G DDR3 1600 ram
Sapphire Tri-x OC 290X
1000W power supply.
the liquid cooling (corsair 105i is not currently connected)

Hi OP,

I am considering two different cases in here -

1. Improper mounting of your liquid cooling.

2. Before detaching the water cooling, your CPU was hitting 80 C at idle. Hence the problem could be on the hardware (the liquid cooling) itself.

I suggest you to test this apparatus in a different computer; Otherwise, a hardware technician must help you over there.

I would suggest doing a very thorough check to make sure there is no condensation/leak before attempting to test in any other system. There is however a major problem with the fact that you were hitting 80 celcius in idle, even a mild spike in usage (like during boot up) could have been puching the CPU way beyond thermal safety limits.

One simple suggestion might be to clear the cmos, some boards wont let you boot if temps get beyond a certain point and seem to get stuck because of it.

Even if that helps my suggestion would be to immediately shut down. Check the processor and heat-sink for any major flaws (scratching etc.) you may have gotten a bad component from the factory or inadvertently damaged something during installation.

Also just in-case make sure that there was not a small piece of plastic covering the copper on the heatsink that may not have been removed. (sorry no offense intended but people miss this.)

You may also have to consider the fact that your mounting bracket/screws etc may not be placed correctly and you may not be getting solid contact. rereading the manufacturers manual might be a good idea, to insure that proper amounts of torque were placed on screws/mounting hardware to get sufficient contact.

Hope some of this helps. let us know if you find anything further out.
