how much ram should i get

my pc is not working due to a motherboard failiure so i am using a old lap top (probably 6 yrs old) its a lenova y500 intel celeron 1.6 ghz cpu and 1gb ram so normally it is slow (i mean really slow) so i would like to get a new ram .how much ram should i get .this laptop is not for all day use just for few weeks(maybe just days) untill i get back my pc .

the processor is working fine but when i does 2 or 3 tasks all at a time it freezes

I will recommend 4 instead of 8, if you are running windows 7, which I assume you are, 4G is enough. and I will never pair 8G of ram with a Celeron processor, and it is unnecessary in your case, if you only run productivity suites and web surf. You are more likely be bottlenecked by the cpu than 4G ram. if cost matters to you, the 4G sticks are going to be much cheaper than the 8G ones.

No.they often do work. I had a compaq laptop with two 512mb dims preinstalled, When I decided to upgrade, I took out one of dims and replace with a 2G module, and it was perfectly fine. and I performed the same procedure on one of my friends. hers worked as well. I believe intel supports populating two slots with dims of different capacities.
