I have been thinking about purchasing a GTX EVGA 780 FTW but there have been rumors of the GTX 880. Should I wait for the 880 or go for the 780? how many generations do you guys think the 780 will last? Thanks

OK, don't wait.
Also, while I don't recommend building a new PC you should be aware that your CPU is actually a major bottleneck for some titles anyway so beyond a certain point a better graphics card won't make as much sense. That's going to shrink going forward as games get better multi-threading like BF4 but for now with most games it's an issue.

My advice is an R9-280X or R9-290 on the AMD side unless you have a specific NVidia feature like PhysX or Shadowplay. I want to recommend NVidia but...

I also had that dilemma. Look at it this way man, if you keep waiting for the next best thing, you will never end up buying anything. Personally I would get the 780, then when you aren't happy with it get a new card. Get whats best now, or you will be forever waiting. If your prepared to wait, you will get around a 20% boost from the 780. Up to you man :)

1) You don't give your specs, or specifically list what games you wish to play which makes your question hard to answer. If you had a good graphics card already such as a GTX760 or similar I'd definitely wait.

2) If AMD is an option then consider that the R9-290 is a much better value for raw performance then the GTX780 (about $100 difference).

3) EFFICIENCY:
It may be initially on 28nm, but consider that the GTX750Ti is a Maxwell GPU and how power efficient that is. That may not translate into massive gains on the top end due to die size limitations but it will amount to a much quieter card.

4) PRICE:
No idea, though the R9-290 is currently about $400 and the GTX780Ti (EVGA OC version) is $650 and only 15% faster on average.

I would GUESS at the GTX880 costing about $600 and being about 10% faster than the GTX780Ti so maybe 30% faster than the R9-290 so perhaps not a great value but these things can change.

5) It might be about FOUR MONTHS from now so we're at the point where I'd tell some people to wait though not most. I'm keeping my Asus GTX680 until the GTX980 as it's doing me just great. Most of the games I have maxed out (plus I'm not buying new for a while due to cheap STEAM games I want to finish... and sinking 1000+ hours into Bethesda games.)

780 if you cant wait, 880 if you dearly want 20% more performance ;)

I want to recommend NVidia but there's a big price gap as the R9-290 is about $400 and about the same as a comparable $500 GTX780. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/R9_290/26.html
