Problematic CPU? 'reboot and select proper boot device' error

Recently developed an error whereby my PC is giving me the 'reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key'.

For whatever reason my disk drive wouldn't read the windows 7 disc. Thinking this was likely an issue with my hard drive I brought it into my workplace and re-installed a fresh install of windows. When I then returned home I got the same error message.

I then borrowed another PC to double check the HD in that machine. This booted without issue. I then tried my graphics card in that machine. Again this booted without issue.

I then tried my own machine trying various different combinations of RAM installed - no luck. Likewise I installed the HD with a different sata cable and power cable. Still nothing. I reset the CMOS battery and I got the same error message, I then measured the voltage of the battery ~ 2.96v so no issue here either.

Since I'm booting into BIOS and can see the likes of the optical drive open I'm presuming the PSU also isn't at fault here.

Through this process of elimination I believe the issue has to be either my motherboard or CPU. I was wondering if there was anything I can do as a simple check to identify either of these. I can't remember for sure the model CPU - however my memory board is an Asus A8N32-SLi Deluxe. It's a socket 939 AMD chip.

Thought I'd ask prior to having to pay out to a local computer firm only for them to tell me one of these is broken and needs replacing.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Regards

Daniel

I do have two hard drives. However one of these has never been plugged in so not convinced this would be the issue.

I tried booting with the other one knowing it had an old redundant copy of windows installed and I got the same error.

Tried multiple sata cables already. Wouldn't have thought it to be the power supply since optical drive seemed to be operational and motherboard receiving power of sorts. Will try another source though to eliminate that as a potential culprit over the weekend. Have ordered a new processor off ebay for a bargain £3.50 so should be able to test that shortly.
