Solution
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 290 4GB TWIN FROZR Video Card ($369.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: XFX 650W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($69.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $439.98
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

it needs a new psu, so the above is what i would get. i also put a R9 290 in there, as an option for you if you cant afford a new psu and a 780. the difference between the 290 and 780 is little, the 290 is slightly faster when overclocked, has more vram, and is cheaper, but is also hotter and louder. depends on your budget and how much heat and noise bother your husband.

Solution
You'll need a good quality 600W power supply eg Seasonic 620, XFX 650 or Antec HCG 620M

Double check that the 780 will fit in his case. You'll have to look up the spec of his case - max vga card length - and the length of the particular 780 you want to buy.

ty for both your replies, quite surprised i only need to buy a new power supply  and could i ask wouldnt i need to change the motherboard for the gtx? i thought nvidia had to have its own motherboard for better performance.

Ty Dan for suggestion, money isnt an issue but i like knowing i have more options :)
