my computer has a black screen and is saying to reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media...what does this mean?

It's saying that it can't find your Windows partition to boot from. That means that somehow your HDD 'Forgot' where all of the windows files are. Either your HDD has died, or you need to try doing a 'repair-install' Put your Windows Install DVD in the optical drive, boot from it, then select 'Repair install" and follow the prompts.
