Hi,

I've been using window 7, and it crashed(I couldn't run even BIOS), so I've installed Ubutnu, but very important files for me, where lost. Is it possible to retrieve lost data, and how? Should I try using some software from ubuntu, or connect my HDD as a slave disk on another PC which is running windows and then try to run some recovery tool? Thanks in advance.

I'm kinda confused on your problem. Tell me if this is right:

  • Your PC crashed while running Windows 7.
  • You could not even boot to BIOS.
  • You replaced the HDD?
  • Did BIOS recover after installing the new HDD?
  • You installed Ubuntu (version?) on the new HDD?
  • You now want to retrieve data from the old HDD using Ubuntu?

  • If I have this correct then yes, you should be able to retrieve the data from the old HDD provided that the old HDD is not physically damaged. Not exactly sure what you mean by "slave" (old IDE term), but could plug it into an open interface (assuming SATA since you're were running W7) and retrieve the data. Ubuntu will read NTFS.

Just so many open questions before a real answer.

  • My PC kept restarting continously, and I couldn't enter BIOS, but after thousands of restarts I've managed(somehow) to enter BIOS from where I selected boot from USB and immediately installed Ubuntu 14 on existing HDD.

Unfortunately, if you installed Ubuntu over W7, in a word: No. If you installed Ubuntu 'alongside' W7 (an option during Ubuntu installation), you should be able to read and retrieve you data.

You are probably right, but if the files are really important he could try to recover some data.
First off, try to put the hard drive into a computer that is working properly, then run Foremost or a similar file carving tool. It might be able to piece together some files. It's a long shot tho, only bother if the files are important.
