Does Sata 3 work with Sata 2 / 1? HELP NEEDED

Hi im looking to build a pc and my motherboard
MSI A55M-E33 Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard is a sata II and my Storage
Toshiba 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive is sata 3 and my Optical drive is sata I will all of these work on my sata II MB

Yes, they will work, but always at the speeds of the slower one (SATA 2 + SATA 3 = SATA 2).

To answer your question as simply as possible, yes your SATA 3 will work with sata 2 however, the speed of your Toshiba at Sata 3 will run at Sata 2, and your optical drive at Sata 1 will run at Sata 1 speed. The different numbers represent how fast the communication rate is but the interface is still the same much like how USB 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 is. Although newer devices such as 3.1, 3.2 etc might be totally different in the future, it is safe to say that 3.0 is backwards compatible and those with 1.0 can safely run with sata 2 compatible motherboards but at Sata 1 speed. Yes. SATA 3 drives are reverse compatible with a SATA 2 port.
