ram really isnt my thing..i have a oem hp with 12gb of ram..how is it they can have 12gb in dual channel mode? i was like "what they make 6gb sticks now?" turns out its an 8gb stick and a 4gb stick. i thought they had to match in ram size too to be dual channel.

thanks for your answer

dude your dealing with HP. there stuff is not nothing like our stuff we use for custom builds .. its a HP designed board with a HP bios this is why when folks want to upgrade them I tell them its a bad idea to do so.

Nope, the sticks don't need to be identical to operate in dual channel mode, but it sure helps with performance and stability.

This Wiki has a pretty good explanation of the memory channel configurations, benefits and limitations.

thats in the past man...hp's new envy series encourages upgradability with a great bios...i upgraded mine with a psu and a gpu....great msi mobo to.

so the 8 and 4gb thing is a oem thing that we as builders cant do?

So you upgraded the entire system minus the processor or did it come with the MSI board?

It's an intel thing. It's flex mode. Only 4gb of that 8gb stick is dual channel.

ya all i wanted was the awesome i7 4770... the msi came with it...i had a small problem with the uefi but changed it to legacy. yes i knew hp were crap and avoided like the plauge but now the new ones for 2014 are better. it was a free comp by the way. my father is into comps also and took me to staples and said pick out any one you want...so i took the i7....and junked the rest.

Oh, good deal then! What's the speed on those memory sticks? Might just want to replace them if you're really upgrading the whole thing for performance.

Why would I lie about something like that? Besides ram bandwidth isn't really a bottleneck and the 8gb that's in dual is plenty for gaming. Unless this isn't for gaming.

nope, he hit the nail on the head. It's called Flex mode. Intel allows rank configurations and installed capacities on separate channels to be mismatched. The memory controller will automatically configure the appropriate multi-channeledness in a bottom-up fashion. 4GiB from the first channel will be interleaved with 4GiB from the second channel to form Intel's dual-channel interleaved configuration, and the remaining 4GiB will be mapped above that in non-interleaved single channel configuration.
