so after a few days of running my system normally i decided to try and overclock my CPU. i currently have and MSI z87 g43 motherboard paired with a i5 4690k.

when i enter the bios OC options i cant seem to take off the core ratio setting off out auto. ive watched tutorials and usually this option can be changed for k series CPU's but for some reason i cant do it. does this mean my CPU cant be over clocked ? or am i missing something that i dont know about..

Don't bother overclocking on stock cooler. You might as well wait for your aftermarket cooler.
But post your BIOS screenshots to see if you set it up right

one thing i forgot to mention. im doing this on a stock cooler just to see if my CPU can hit 4.3 for just a bit. im not going to run this long. is this recommendable or not. because using intel extreme tuning utility i can over clock it easy. but my temps shoot waaaaaaay up using prime95 at 4.0ghz. fearing the worst i turn it off right away. should i just wait until i get a aftermarket cooler to even test my cpu overclock even a bit ?

Agreed, definitely don't run the haswell non-devils canyon chips with an oc on the stock coolers.

have you tried updating the motherboards BIOS, go the MSI and search for updates that might do the trick.

Also make sure that your motherboard is a Z87 and not a H87, or that your CPU is a K version, just to make sure.

First, DO NOT run Prime95 with the stock cooler, even if not OC'd. Wait until you get a better cooler.

What BIOS version do you have? An update may be required to get all of the Devil's Canyon features. The latest is ver. 1.90. D/L here: http://www.msi.com/support/mb/Z87G43.html#down-bios Let me know if you need BIOS flashing instructions.

The easiest way to adjust CPU multis is with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (IXTU). The alternative is in the BIOS. Make sure that "Turbo Boost" and "EIST" are both enabled. Then scroll down to "CPU Features", highlight it and press Enter to go into the CPU Features sub-menu. Down near the end of the CPU Features sub-menu you will find your individual core multipliers. Adjust as needed, then "Save and Exit".
