Ethernet Connection, Possible Issues

Hey, I'm shortly going to be constructing my first build. I'm in the middle of purchasing some of the components. Anyway, I was wondering how I'm supposed to connect to the Internet with my new PC. Yeah, I know that I can buy one of those ugly wireless networking cards, but I really want an Ethernet connection.

The only problem is that the only thing in my room that an Ethernet cable can plug into is a phone jack, and I would need an Ethernet/phone jack converter to utilize that. Regardless, I'm not going to do this because I heard that's sketchy and might not work.

I can't run my Ethernet cable from my PC upstairs, through the wall, and down into the first story to plug into the router. That's also out of the question. In addition, I'm not keeping my PC downstairs to remedy that issue.

Anyway, I've been considering something called Power over Ethernet, or PoE. The only problem is I'm not sure this is going to work. In fact how does it even work? Are there any other options? The PoE seems pretty cheap, so that's cool. Here's an example of one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0ZK-0029-00002&cm_re=power_over_ethernet-_-0ZK-0029-00002-_-Product. Thanks, guys.

That being said, the only issue with Powerline is that there are sometimes issues with a refrigerator or a A/C on the same circuit with a large power draw. Powerline adapters are rather cheap and I personally think it would be worth a try.

Also there is a one note about powerline adapters on that link you posted.
GFCI outlets and AFCI circuit breakers may degrade Powerline network signals.

Can I plug the thingy into a UPS that's plugged into an outlet?

Thats a good question I do not know the answer for. UPS's tend to do some noise filtering amongst other things, it may not work when plugged into a UPS, either way though if the power went out the other powerline adapter would have to have some backup power otherwise the network connection will not work

This is driving me nuts. I really don't want to buy an ugly wireless adapter. Those things look like malignant tumors.
