I5 4770k unlocked vs i7 4790

I found a killer deal on an i7 4790 haswell processor for $239 brand new. That's $10 more than the 4770k i5 processor I was also looking at. My question is whether it would be better to get the unlocked i5, or the locked i7 for a home theater/gaming pc. I don't intend on overclocking immediately if I did get the i5, but is the option to oc better in the long run? Keep in mind, this is my first build, and I've never done oc before, but I am a pretty tech savvy guy. What are your thoughts?

Unless you have something that will exploit hyperthreading, you won't find much additional value/performance in the i7 4790. On that basis, the i7 buys you 100Mhz more performance vs the potential to unlock the i5.

You do the math. I'd go for the i5.

4770k is a i7; not a i5. Did you mean 4670k?

I would choose hyperthreading (more threads) over overclocking. I'm disappointed with overclocking on the Haswell processors.

Sorry, yes it was a typo, but it's also a moot point now lol. I meant i5 4690k, but the i7 sold out the same day I posted the question, so I'm getting the i5 unless another sale happens in the next few weeks

If you don't want to overclock and don't need integrated graphics, you can get a Xeon eg e1230v3 for less than the i7 4790. It is the same cpu. But a lot cheaper.
