Unable to transfer files to 250 GB WD Passport. Possible Hard Drive Failure

Hi everyone! I hope you're all doing well!

I have a a 250 GB WD Passport that is roughly 7 years old and it was doing fine until today. I'm able to open files, read them, etc., but when I'm trying to transfer over my files to another hard drive, sometimes even writing files, the drive clicks and disconnects 2-3 times before my computer recognizes it. I can export files in small chunks, but nothing beyond that.

I tried scanning the drive to fix it for bad sectors, but it kept disconnecting. I tried Recuva, but it disconnected during the scan as well.

Basically, the files just sit there. Any thoughts?

  1. Yea sounds like its going bad. Install the Crystal Disk Info in my signature. It will tell you how bad it is and if we can do steps to recover files.

Hey drtweak! Thanks for the response! I installed Crystal Disk Info and these were my results. C5 was the one that flagged up as yellow, but everything else was blue. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information!:

  3. Ok so it has 5 Current Pending sector Count which means that they are sectors that are going bad, that it is still trying to recover files from, but hasn't quite given up on them yet to make it a uncorrectable sector count.

But the clicking is what worries me more. that is usually a different issue. I've see drives with no bad sectors or anything and have the click of death still but they could be related.

Ok so lets try this. I was able to clone and recover files off a Failing hard drive but it didn't have the click of death (Which is what causes it to dissapear and then reappear.

Download and install this program here.

    http://www.datarescue.com/freefiles/drdd.exe.zip

Once installed and open select the drive from the drop down in the Source Menu. Then set a save path (Note you MUST HAVE 250GB of free space! It clones the ENTIRE DRIVE Not just the data part!

If you have space great. If not we will have to try another approach.

So if you have space select a save location. Of course not on the external drive.

Now start should be 0 and end should be the end sector. By default its sector 0 to end.

Now see where it says Read Direction? Have it start form the Back of the drive not the front. Once that is set hit the start button. If it is successful let me know and we can move on to the next step.

I ran Data Rescue and followed everything you said above, but when I started the run, it instantly gave me, "Write error at 0: No error" and the program just shut itself down. On a lighter note, at least the drive didn't disconnect when attempting this!

Edit: So I took it upon myself to transfer files in small chunks. It turns out I can copy in small chunks from the drive to the desktop, but not to my other drive. When I reached a corrupt file, the drive disconnected, and at some point, it started physically spinning on my table through its enclosure. It was honestly extremely strange.

In terms of data, fortunately I only filled 138 GB out of the 250 GB and only had to chuck irrelevant files so far so I guess this is a good step!

haha thats good! glad you at least got what was important off there.

But the Crystal Disk Info program is a great program to have. Check your hard drives once a month and make sure they all say good. Will help prevent this from happening in the future. You'll know when a drive is dieing before it dies lol

Will do! I liked Crystal Disk, it's more informative than the other stuff I've been using haha. As an update, I got everything except for 6 files (which weren't even important) and everything is safely in a new drive! The old drive is really dead since it started overheating at the end and is even reading the disk size wrong, so I'm happy I got my stuff just in time. Thanks for everything, drtweak! Stay awesome, and I hope you have a great rest of the week :D
