I already posted how my computer won't boot. I think I will just get a new computer. The only thing I am looking for in a laptop this time around is that it will last more than 5 years. I've had three laptops so far and all of them have broken in only 3 years. What brands/laptops are know to last a long time/ won't break in such a short period of time? Some people say that's around the time that specs get outdated, but I disagree, especially now. I can't ever imagine that a current intel i7, 8 gig ram, Nvidia gpu laptop would be dysfunctional spec wise 5 years from now. Especially if all I´m going to do is internet surfing, word processing, and some light gaming. So overall, I am just tired of replacing my laptop every few years (including rebuying all the programs and losing some files inevitably since I only backup every once and a while). So any recommendations? (Oh I also know that battery life will always suck a lot after many years. This is fine. I usually used my laptop plugged in. Even when I'm traveling there are electrical outlets everywhere.) Thanks!

Lenovo ThinkPads are pretty durable laptops which can help prolong the operating life of the laptop if you are somewhat clumsy with laptops. Got a ThinkPad T40 from 2003 that still works, but it is too under powered now event to surf the web. However, these are business laptops, not gaming laptops.

The ThinkPad T series can be configured with a GT 730m GPU, but that is Lenovo's premium brand laptop so it will be rather expensive after adding options. For example, the 15.6" ThinkPad T540 base price starts at $854. Upgrading to an i7-4700MQ CPU, 1080p resolution screen, 8GB of RAM and the GT 730m the price shoots up to $1,410.

Is the GT 730m GPU great for games? No.
Will the ThinkPad T540 still function after 5 years? Most likely...

Well laptops that cost more usually are made with better parts. Also playing into the equation is how you use the laptop. I'm the opposite of you as every laptop I've purchased has lasted 5 years but the one's I've bought were over over 1000. Half of my purchased laptops were over $2000.

Well the models are no longer made. I've had 3 Acer's Aspire models (9810 & 8950G) the 8950g is 4 years old. and the 9810 is 8 years old and my friend is still using, 2 Sagers, 1 HP. I just ordered an alienware 18 yesterday.

There are a lot of 'good' quality laptops just under and over $1000, made this list for my brother yesterday:

ThinkPads are used by a lot of businesses and I know of many people who are still using somewhat dated ThinkPads; about 3 to 4+ years old.

=========================================================

Back in 2011 I purchased the 14" Lenovo IdeaPad Y470 laptop which has the GT 550m. After about 18 months the GT 550m died. The laptop still functions, but without the GT 550m there is no longer a reason to use that laptop to play games.
