Hello all. I've had a Hero VII board for a few weeks now and am just looking into the RAMDISK software. I'm interested in possibly using this to speed up movie editing. I use Windows Movie Maker to edit a lot of wmv's, mpeg 4's, avi's, etc. Most of the file sizes I'm editing range from 500 mb up to 3 or 4 GB when I start. They are usually a lot smaller when I am finished. If I'm cutting down a video that starts out at about 3 GB and finishes at about 500 MB, it usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes to complete once I hit the go button, depending on the formats. Does this Ramdisk software have the potential to speed that up? If so, how do I go about it?
I've got 16 GB of RAM. If I create a RAMDISK drive of about 6 GB, what would be my next step? Do I need to install the Movie Maker software on the RAMDISK, and place the video file there as well, and then transfer the finished product to an HDD afterwards?
Or, should I leave Movie Maker where it is and only transfer the file to be edited to the RAMDISK, edit, save, and then transfer the finished product to an HDD? I know these are probably silly questions for folks who understand Ramdisk, but like I said, I am new to the concept.

If would help with the disk intensive stuff but the stuff that needs your processor won't be improved naturally. Give it a try and see. Just dont move your only copy of something to the ramdisk. The ramdisk is volitile and if it crashes everything in it could be gone.

I gave this a try yesterday evening and ran into some difficulties. I made the disk just fine. When I move, or copy a .mp4 into the Ramdisk, Windows Movie Maker won't open the file. It tells me that it's not in a recognizable format. It's still a .mp4. I can move or copy the same file back to an HDD, and Windows Movie Maker will open it just fine at that point. I found a work around, sort of, but it defeats the whole purpose of why I want to use the Ramdisk. I can open the file with Movie Maker while on the HDD, save it as a project on the Ramdisk, then edit from there, but this doesn't seem to be any faster than not using the Ramdisk at all. Does anyone have any idea how I can make Movie Maker open the file in it's original form while the file is on the Ramdisk?

Thanks,
