When i load my computer up now the catalyst control centre and other programs use 100% of my disk and continue to do it as well

you have a virus. Defiantly.
maybe a bit coin mining virus, running in the background utilizing your GPU and probably CPU. IF you CTRL ALT DELET and look at the performance monitor, I bet CPU and ram usage is high as well.
Download a bootable virus scanner (to be put on disk). This will run outside windows environment and eliminate your virus(s)

No I am not implying it is the GPU. I guess heavy gaming was a poor example, I apologize.
My experience, these issues are cause by viruses. Even if you do not download anything dodgy.
