CD drive problem

I have a 6mo ASUS AiO, and a few weeks ago, the D drive stopped working. I can put a disk in (like turbo tax), the green light goes on while it reads, then goes out.
'Data D:' shows up in 'this pc', and the drive says '761GB free of 762GB'.
If I put in a photo disk I made, with 700MB max, it will still read '761...', and when I click on it, it will still say 'this folder is empty'.
So it seems to recognize the drive, but doesn't read the disk. In device mgr, it is showing no problems or conflicts. I'm running Win8 (and like it. Glad I got it. My wife wanted the touch screen - which we never use, as predicted...)
I guess the drive is replaceable (if that is the problem), but since it's an AiO, it may be simpler to buy a USB CD drive?
Any ideas?
