upgrading my cpu

hey guys, my current cpu is a fx8320 3.5ghz 8-core and im looking to upgrade it, but i dont want to spend alot of cash changing my motherboard and processor so i was looking at just keeping the am3+ motherboard, so i was looking at the fx8350 4ghz 8-core, would this be a big upgrade?
also i noticed my cpu only has 8mb cache and the 8350 has 16mb of cache? whats this and would it improve my performance, im not looking to overclock so would this be a good swap, or possibly i may consider the fx9370 4.4ghz 8-core, but this only has 8mb cache??

HELP...?

Solution

No worries on your setup that's prob about right. It's not a huge gain. But it's a few frames extra for nothing and no overclocking. That's why I recommend giving it a try to anyone l

the performance increase would be a little noticeable but not mind blowing. as far as the cache goes im not sure how much improvement this will provide. i would buy an aftermarket cooler and do some overclocking before i looked into a new chip. you will be able to hit close to those speeds with an overclock.

dont bother. if youre wanting to upgrade on the cheap..just overclock your current cpu (even though you dont want to). its really really really not worth the cost involved moving up to anything higher within the AMD AM3+ family, considering the minimal performance increase involved.

if need be, get yourself a nice air/water cooler and bump your current cpu up to 4+ghz.
or dump the mobo/cpu on ebay and get a nice intel 4790, or perhaps even a 6/12core LGA2011 rig

why do you seek more performance? rendering? gaming?

yeh you guys are right, i may aswell keep it for a little while longer and maybe look at overclocking it, the reason for more performance is for gaming as i wanted to see if i could gain better fps rates, i currently get around a constant 80/85fps on battlefield 4 and was wondering if i could break the 100fps barrier. another question. my current ram i have is 16gb patriot black viper 1600mhz, do you think its worth considering upgrading that from the 1600mhz?

no stick with the 1600 there will be next to no difference with faster ram in gaming. why push the 100fps barrier are you on more than 100hz monitor beacause if your only on 60 then you monitor is only displaying 60 fps and the rest are going to waste.

increasing ram clock would be an even poorer way to spend your money as far as gaming goes. even with most non-gaming programs the jump from 1600mhz to 1866/2133 is very minimal, performance-wise.

why try to increase FPS when its already well over 60? do you plan on running a 120+hz monitor? even then, chances are a video card upgrade would be a better option

edit: i like you, AUShollowpoint. great minds think alike.

there was no particular reason to increase the fps, i really just wanted to see if i could achieve over 100fps on battlefield, and i only play on a 60hz monitor anyhow so like you guys say it would be quite a waste of cash, and upgrade my gpu? i thought my gpu was good, ive only had it 2 months lol. its a r9 290 tri-x overclocked 4gb

well when we are right it makes sense hey mate. i dont see the point of staying on the same platform as an upgrade you better off pushing the hardware you have than throwing money away.

yeah, thats AMD's top of the line single-gpu video card. itll last you for years to come
edit. i read 290x 4gb, only to see its 290 4gb. still a top-tier gpu regardless.

Just a little info.

FX 9590 = FX 8320 factory overclocked from 3.5GHz to 4.7GHz
FX 9370 = FX 8320 factory overclocked from 3.5GHz to 4.4GHz
FX 8350 = FX 8320 factory overclocked from 3.5GHz to 4.0GHz

In other words any possible upgrade from the FX 8320 you currently own is same as spending your money on the same chip you already own. The only difference in the upgraded cpu's (other than price) is that they are better binned, so they start out with a higher GHz. Absolutely no reason you couldn't hit 4.7GHz (same as an FX 9590) other than if you totally bombed out on the cpu lottery and the cpu just can't find stability at those speeds.

then you have an issue somewhere? you should be getting more that 100fps on that GPU? have you done the core unparking on win 7 or are you on win 8

no i havnt done that, what is core unparking? i thought i should be getting better fps than i am, but on second thoughts ive looked online and youtube ect and most people with the amd cpu's get around the same as me, but the intel cpu systems beat the 100fps mark.

ok, so i might have to look into overclocking then, im off to the local pc shop tomorrow, ant recommendations for a good cooler for my cpu? i dont really fancy a water cooling one, as if i was going to overclock it wouldnt be much, prob from 3.5 to 3.8/4ghz maybe?

yeh guess i should maybe look to jump to intel in the near future rather than stick with amd as alot of people i speak to on here swear by intel, and the youtube clips prove you get better fps ect....

give this a shot. you could see anywhere from 5-20 fps gain. then i would overclock cpu. high quality air cooler or mid range water will be fine for keeping your temps where they need to be

well I went intel for my firs time in 14 years and I cant say I'm disappointed

its just that like I said theres nothing new unless you go to fm2+ and there older Athlon chips.
this is another thing I found funny if am3+ is there top enthusiast chip why are they not used for the apu set ups and they felt they had to revert to the older Athlon chip for that new platform?? well that told me it was time to move over to intel

What most gamers look for out of a gpu is not the max fps, but the best average. They are looking for 'seamlessness'. So if a gpu averages 60fps in a game, that means it will have periods of lower than 60fps as well as higher than 60fps. With a 60Hz monitor, just about any average fps near 100 means the lows will still be beyond the 60Hz refresh so the game looks flawless.

gpu- are you running Mantle on that? at 1080p in BF4 you should be hitting 100fps avg, if not over with that gpu. That thing is a beast.

i have just tried going to that webpage but i cant find a link to download the program? it only has a link to download a image converter file??
!!edit- so ive downloaded it and run the check on it and it said, number 0,1 and 2 cores were all parked at 100. so ive unparked them and ile give battlefield a quick go now.

just tried battlefield 4 after doing the core unparker thing and still no improvement, getting around a constant 60fps, but occasionally jumps to around 100fps but sometimes drops to 40fps for a brief second, this may be because im only half way through downloading all the add on packs for battlefield and it says the performance may be down on the game if i play it when im part-way through the download of the add ons, however im not playing it when im downloading it, ive stalled all the downloads.
