Hello every one

quick question, my buddy is getting me a good deal on OS 7 for $80 and 8.1 $40 but which one is better? like I have FX 8350 and R9 280X GPU, would 8.1 be better?

Here is my rig:

CPU: FX 8350
MB: Sabertooth 990FX 1st gen (BIOS fully up to date)
RAM: G.Skills sniper 2 sticks 4GB each and at 1600 but low volt
SSD: Samsung 128Gb Pro
HDD: 1TB WD Black
PSU Corsair AX850 Gold
Networking Card: Killer 2100
SoundBlaster Card: ZX
CPU Cooler: Corsair H80i liquid cooling
Antec 1200

Samsung 4K Monitor

Now snice,my MB is the 1stgen, it will have the nice software for os 7 but not 8.1 unless I go and buy the 3r gen, which to me it's not worth $200 just for that. So my question is, 8.1? or 7? which will give me better performance and visual?

I use 8.1 on my downstairs gaming rig and 7 on my upstairs gaming rig:) IMO the interface is the only difference and since the 'modern' interface can be easily avoided I see no reason to avoid 8.1 other than personal preference. Windows 8 is newer and (ignoring the interface) there are some improvements over 7, though exactly what they are escapes me ATM. It will probably have a longer support life than 7, maybe. The modern UI is probably a dead end from an APPs point of view so you won't be missing much by staying with 7. So, there you have it. 8.1 does not have a bad rep with gamers, it's mostly with people who just don't think the interface had any business being on a desktop.

I used 8.1 at work, I don't have any problems with it, just wondering, what be better for my rig. So if it's the same performance, I mine as well buy Windows 7, so I can use the nice ASUS software.... So 7 and 8.1 knows how to use the 8 core just as well etc?

People are selling copies of Windows 8.1 at that price, and a few at a lower price. Those that are selling it at those prices are making HUGE profits, because they get ONE license key, and keep selling it until it stops working. Once enough people have bought it and Microsoft gets a certain number of activation requests for the same key, they will kill the key and your Windows will no longer be activated. You will receive a message stating you need a genuine copy of Windows.

Yeah, I know people who have gotten burned like that. Then they have to go to a retail store and pay full price so they can enter a key to keep using Windows.

Take my word for it. There are no fantastic deals on Windows 8, 8.1, 7, or any other version. Microsoft sets a limited price range it can be sold at, and if it is selling for less or more, then the seller is breaking the law. Do not trust it.

As far as which I'd go with, I'd go with 8.1, especially with the next round of free updates that are coming. Under the hood, 8.1 is slightly faster. Time for boot up from a cold machine is MUCH faster then 7. Much has been improved in Windows 8.1 over 7.
