Hello All,

New to the forum and I poked around a bit to try and find my answer, but it didn't jump out to me.

I have a Dell Computer with a Socket AM3 (938) MB, currently sporting a AMD Athlon II X4 630 Proc. I called Dell to see if I could upgrade the MB, or Proc and they of course said "no". I wanted to see if there was an option for a faster (what is the fastest) Proc might be for my current MB. The PC has 2TB of disc, 8GB RAM, 1GB Video, so I'm ok there for now. I'd just like a bit more Proc, so the PC is a bit more responsive.

Any ideas on what I can plug in here?

TIA,

Whooosh_A4qslt......

P.S. Memory is 533mhz DDR3, I know this could be upgraded to be faster....

If you can get the exact model of the motherboard I could help you with how far you can go cpu wise. Might have to go with the Dell computer model and do a search to find which one it is. If it's a correct motherboard you could get an AM3+ cpu for it with a bios update.

If the Phenom will work, it looks to be about twice the perf of the current CPU. See =168&cmp[]=394]http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=168&cmp[]=394 for a comparison.... Dell makes their MB/Case very proprietary, so a new MB probably won't fit? Thanks for your comments.

You would have to look at the case and see if it has removable stand offs for mobo but it is possible. But if you can find a phenom 2 965 BE it will work and will be a huge performance increase in that current mobo. If you like I can find the link with what you can all do with current mobo.

You could definitely find a new motherboard that will fit. You just need to find what size your current motherboard is. I would guess its either a mini or micro ATX.

Now I'm not sure of your needs, but the Phenom 1100 is still a very powerful CPU, getting 5.87 on cinebench 11.5. The only downfall is you won't be able to overclock very well with the Dell motherboard most likely, and they are quite hard to find for a reasonable price. But if overclocking is not something you will be doing then I would guess your best bet is the Phenom...if you can find one. You could also try and find a slightly less powerful Phenom II like the 1090, 1075T, 1065T ect. for cheaper, and get around a 5.2 or 5.3 Cinebench 11.5 score.

But remember, for $190, you can get a FX 8320, and new motherboard that even supports crossfire and usb 3, which will get you a 6.3 score on Cinebench 11.5. And the 8320 can overclock quite well, and get all the way up to a 7.75 when overclocked to 4.4GHz (which pretty much all 8320's should be able to get to, if not beyond). So you can get more performance for the same money. Here is a list of the parts I mentioned for $190.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor ($129.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI 970A-G43 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $189.98

If going that route and doing a mobo upgrade also I would suggest going to a 990 chipset board you can get better performance and more benefits from it and is worth the money imho. I have used this board plenty before and can recommend it easily. Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 Hope this helps you with your decision.
