Hi,
I'm looking for a reliable CD/DVD burner for my new build. In the past, THG would have a recent review for things I am looking for and would buy those I read about. These types of articles always saved me from making mistakes so I'm looking but I am unable to find something current or recent.

I need help finding a current/recent review on DVD burners. Can you help me?

Thanks in advance,
Koz

i've noticed that many of the cheaper models ($15-20) do not seem to last as long as some of the more expensive ones i've owned but other than that they all seem to write well. i'm on my second LG dvd drive since 2010. my $100 blueray writer, also LG, seems to be holding out pretty good.

in the past i've had a plextor dvd writer which was about $80-100 and it worked flawlessly for a good 10 years.

is it worthwhile to get something expensive? not really. if it breaks you can just replace it for far less than it would cost to buy a good one (unless of course you need a blueray burner in which case they seem to be better built anyways.).

as far as creating coasters... thats not typically a problem anymore even on $15 drives. my $15 and...

Hi,

DVD burners matured a very long time ago, I'm not even certain if there's been any major developments in the past 5 years. Most modern DVD and BluRay burners are highly performant and full featured (BluRay burners can also burn DVDs), so there's almost no difference between each manufacturer. Asus, Samsung, LG, and LiteOn are the major manufacturers. Some of the Asus BluRay burners are actually rebranded LiteOn burners.

Thank You to you both. The insight both of you provided was excellent covering my areas of concern: any new technology, cheap vs more expensive, reliability, and best of all both of you cited the Blu Ray. I had not looked at that...Blu Ray level, but after hearing what was said, I will research it.

My old Plextor bit the dust after 8 years...it was expensive but it did hold up for a long time.

I appreciate the feedback and help. I would select both answers as the solution if I could.

Thanks,
Matt
