A neighbor brought over their HP G7 Series Laptop. They admitted they aren't computer people. He warned me that the version of windows he had, he didn't think it was legit. I wondered how that could be with having a windows 7 Home Premium Key on the bottom of the laptop.

Booted it up to find Windows 7 Ultimate installed. In the bottom right corner it would says Windows 7 Build 7600 this copy of Windows is not Genuine.

I only remember seeing that when I used the beta of Windows 7... so thats what I thought it was. But they did have a product #.

with Windows update turned on and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials I cleaned up a lot of Malware and junk.

I saw the Recovery Partition that HP has on their Laptops. Learned that to use it I need to push F11 from a boot menu. when I do this it would just boot into windows. Even though I know when I was running Security Essentials it scanned the Recovery Drive and I could see the files there.

Here is the strange part that I can't figure out. If I boot into Windows normally (not F11) I get the Windows Ultimate Not a Valid copy (I even open up the Activate windows little program and it says I need to put in a valid key).

BUT if I do the Boot and Push F11 windows comes up, but it has the Valid Key already entered. (No Windows 7 Build 7600 in the corner). I open up the activate windows and it is already activated and says its valid. Everything else on the computer is the exact same.

I tested this by just putting a file on the desktop. It is there no matter which one I boot into.

I can't figure out how or why using the Recovery option would boot using the valid windows key?

Also what is weird... is I boot into the bad windows. I then boot into the good windows and while its booting up I get a box saying I need to activate windows. if i hit cancel I can see the windows is valid. (it seems to set that flag when I reboot from the bad windows).

I can't figure out how this happens??

My suspicion is that booting it with F11 may boot it without the crack used to enable the Ultimate features. It may appear to be Windows 7 Ultimate, but it will have Home Premium...

Never heard of this, have you tried entering in the product key into the non genuine copy of windows and see what happens? I normally see the windows build XXXX when its a computer from a company or business....I think he took it to some less than reputable tech and put a copy of windows on it and didn't enter a product key. Did the computer come with windows 7 ultimate 64/32 originally?

If I were you I would save time and back up and just wipe the entire HDD and reload the proper OS with the proper key and call it a day.

Windows 7 Home Premium keys cannot be used to activate Windows 7 Ultimate. At some point someone replaced the Windows 7 Home Premium installation with a cracked Windows 7 Ultimate.

Ahh nice catch, I didn't see that he said the product key for the tag was home premium, I tend to scan posts when I read them. So them it would make my conclusion from either true that he took it to a less than reputable tech and he did some funny business with it. Wipe it and put home premium on it

I guess for the fun of it I did try to see if the Windows 7 Home Key would work. Which it didn't.

I used that Magic JellyBean to get the Key. The key is the same if I go into the good or bad one.

The thing is why would it work (show its Genuine Windows 7) just by pushing F11?

I did try using the Key in the bad one. I got an error that I need to call Microsoft. Looking up the error its because I'm trying to activate some OEM copy. I guess I would need to call to activate it?

Then again hitting F11 also works. So strange.
