780 is in close contest with 290. 290x is better. however for 1080p 780 and 290 provide more than enough performance. The 290x does a little better, but its more for higher resolutions. if you have the money for 290x, buy it.
If you want very good performance price ratio then 290 / 780 will do amazing for 1080. As performance they are very very close, but if you want to record game play the nvidia card offers shadowplay, something you could consider.
