I have a Acer laptop and a few days ago I switched it on and was presented with the above error message - see subject line.

When laptop will not boot into windows, but gives me the option to 1. start normally (which doesn't work) or 2. run a digagnostic check. When I run the check it gets about half way through the "loading files" stage and then reverts to original error message.

My warranty has run out, but I contacted Acer who advised using their system recovery tool, unfortunately that doesnt work either. I contacted them again and they said their must be "bad files" on the partition of HDD and I would need a technician to delete and then run their system recovery which they said would resolve issue.

Is there anyway I could perform what they have requested or will I have to take to a shop, thanks.

You can legally download an ISO image of Windows 7 Home x64 or x64 that your pc probably uses from the links here.

http://www.techverse.net/download-windows-7-iso-x86-x64-microsofts-official-servers/

Burn the ISO to DVD or better still use a USB pendrive using Microsofts own tool from here.

http://images2.store.microsoft.com/prod/clustera/framework/w7udt/1.0/en-us/Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe

Now boot of the DVD/USB and use the repair options.
If it fixes the errors and you can get back in to Windows, make sure you create a set of Acer recovery DVD's from the recovery partition, should be a link in the START MENU under Acer.

If that doesn't work, then the HDD and software is toast.
Replace the HDD, use the DVD/USB to install a fresh copy of Windows and use your Acer licence key found the base of the laptop to activate.
You will have to go to the Acer website and download any drivers that you need.

All this is legal !

Hi das_stig,

Thanks for your prompt reply. When you refer to "use the repair options", do you mean this message will be generated from the image I have downloaded or do I have to try and start he Acer recovery tool again. Also am I better selecting the upgrade or custom option?

In relation to the links, am I downloading the full OS in the first link then using the tool from link number 2 and transfer to USB?

Is this the full version of win 7 and not a trial version?

Thanks
