Hello everyone,

I've encountered a strange issue with my graphics card Asus R9 290 Direct CU II whose memory clock does not throttle at idle. It stays at stock 1260 MHz no matter what application/game are running, desktop idle, etc. I must mention that the GPU clock is throttling normally, at idle being @ 300 MHz. The temperatures at idle are c. 45-46 C, within a very well - full ATX - ventilated case (4 x 20cm fans, 3 x 14cm fans)
I have noticed that the issue occurs when the refresh rate on my BenQ XL2411T is set at 144 Hz. If set to 120hz the memory clock is throttling as it is supposed to (and temperatures are also going down by a few degrees at idle). You could probably say to stick with 120 hz refresh if everything works normally, however I enjoy more the smoothness of 144 hz :)
I have used drivers 14.4, 14.6 and 14.7 however the results are the same.

Any idea on what may trigger the memory constant utilization @144hz refresh rate?

Here are my PC specs:
Windows 7 64 SP 1
Proc i7 4770K (stock or not, issue occurence is the same)
Corsair H110 (with Noctua fans)
Mobo Asrock Z87 Extreme 4
Memory 16 Go Corsair Vengeance Pro @1866
SSD 256 Kingston

Thank you for your suggestions.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply! I wonder why that didn't happen with my previous card (Radeon 7990)?

Regards.

7990 is much more powerful and has more DRAM, it's easier for it to carry the load ;)
