Hi, I have decided to make some changes in my laptop, i.e.:

  • ■ SSD instead of HDD + new system on SSD
    ■ old HDD instead of DVD
after all the instalations I have encountered a problem: Windows does not see the old hdd. It is visible in BIOS but not in my computer nor the device manager nor even in the disk management tool. I have tried installing/updating some drivers (newest chipset drivers, intel rapid storage and even I have updated BIOS) but still no effect. Does anyone has an idea what could cause such a problem?

The laptop is Dell Inspiron 5537; the disks are 1TB HDD WD and Samsung SSD 840 Pro 256GB

It's by no means unusual for the BIOS to detect a failed hard drive even though Windows can't see it, so it's possible that since it's an old hard drive, it may have failed.

You could try testing it but that may not be possible if Windows can't see it, the testing software may not see it either, but worth a try. Use this: SeaTools for Windows: http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/

If it can't be tested due to non-detection, hook it up to different PC to confirm that Windows can't see it on that PC either, in which case it's a reasonably safe bet that it has indeed failed.

Thank you for your answer, but as you suspected, the SeaTools does not see the disk.

Well, I named the disk old in order to distinguish it from the new one, the 'old', hdd disk was bought like 7 months ago and since yesterday it worked without any problems. However, I might have somehow damaged it when I was changing its location from its original place to the opti bay.

I am still struggling with the problem. On the 'old' disk there is still installed OS (can it cause the problem?) and I tried to change the boot to that disk but the OS did not start - system loading lasted a bit longer than usual and BSOD occured and to be honest I do not know whether it brings something to the situation.
