Hello everyone.

I am on a sophisticated mission of building my first budget oriented gaming machine.
I initially made $1500 mark as my spending limit and as well decided to not go cheap on CPU and GPU.
But lately i found some really good deals on RAM, PSU, Case etc. And now i am left with only CPU and GPU to decide about. And in all honesty, i am clueluess about which one to go with.

So
i can get Pentium G3258 + z97 MSI PC MATE Motherboard = $89 (Microcenter)
OR
i can get i5-4690k + MSI Gaming-5 Motherboard = $340 (Microcenter)
OR
i can get i7-4790k + MSI Gaming-5 Motherboard = $420 (Microcenter)

I love the looks for MSI Gaming-5, exclusive of all the benefits that it offers. Money, is not the issue. But i still would want to buy smartly. I want the best bang for my bucks. And at the same time i want some future proofing as well.

So that is when i need expert advice on the matter.

1. Should i buy G3258 combo and stick with it for a year or two and then again upgrade the CPU. OR i should rather go for i5-4690k and keep it in the system for next 5 years.
I think i am gonna leave the i7-4790k out of race, as for gaming i think i5-4690k will be suffice.

2. As for the GPU, i am eyeing on R9 290, as GTX 780 again loose in the battle of performance per dollar race. Please recommend me any other if you like. Again, i want best performance for my money.

3. Choosing b/w IPS and TN Panel is also a debate, but for some other day. But feel free to advice, if you can.

4. IS stock cooler sufficient for G3258 when overclocked to 4.5, because i've heard they run warm, and do not get too hot. If i went for i5, i have Corsair H100i in mind.

5. Is it mandatory to apply thermal paste on CPU ? How much does it help to keep CPU calm. I am skeptical about applying some gel/paste on CPU. Amm may be because i am new.

You can see rest of my PC Parts here at : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/pRDhFT

And in last, sorry if i made any mistake, this is my first post. And i hope i will be helped by awesome people. Thanks in advance !!

id rather the i5 setup.... that motherboard is good. The z97 PC mate isnt the best motherboard, its probably the cheapest z mobo.

the i5 will last you many years, as since sandy bridge there hasnt been much improvement in intel CPUs

I would say the older i7-4770K and a ECS 1337 Z97 Machine motherboard. And for that matter, get a 780 Ti because it's more performance for ultra assurance.

And so unfortunate for your power supply. It isn't that good. Get a XFX l, SeaSonic, Corsair, EVGA, but I don't recommend Rose will.

Go with the i5. It should last you a long time without needing to upgrade

As for the gpu, the R9 290 offers the best bang for buck being cheaper than the gtx 780 while offering same performance

An IPS has better color depth and viewing angles but is slower than a TN. For gaming go with a TN monitor

Thermal Paste is recommend to help lower the temps. Don't apply too much though, just a small blob

Not necessary, but can get to ultra.

An i5 can get to ultra just as well as an i7. Both the i5 and i7 have similar single core capabilities. There will be little difference and in some cases the i5 is stronger in gaming alone. It'd really come down to the graphics card for ultra capabilities at that point.

Between the two gpus the OP was eyeing at, I'd go with the r9 290 with a decent cooler, it'll out perform the gtx 780 in most cases.

Thank you for all the answers.

Looks like i am good with R9 290 GPU and a TN monitor. And Yes I've heard really good things about Rosewill Capstone PSU, even jonnyguru.com said good about it. So i think i am all good there.

But regarding CPU, don't you all think, if i use the G3258 and z97 mobo setup, which is for $100 for 2 years. and buy a better CPU at that time which would last me another 5 years is a better plan?. I am trying to look at the scenario as this:

$100/2 years = $50/year (for G3258 + MSI PC MATE)
$340/5 years = $68/ year (for i5-4690k + MSI Gaming 5)

Any comments on this ?

I doubt the G3258 would last another 2 years. It no doubt gives reasonable gaming performance now especially when overclocked but you can never say how that would hold up in the future especially with only 2 cores and no hyper threading. I wouldn't bet on it for lasting 2 years.

this is very true, the G3258 is about is powerful as an athlon x4 750, except that the athlon does better with rendering, and the g3258 has better indivudual core performance.
