Screen froze, mouse and keyboard turned off?

I was playing RIFT on my computer, when suddenly my screen froze. My mouse and keyboard turned off, they were unresponsive and their light turned off. I tried ctrl-alt-delete but of course the keyboard was unresponsive. My sound also cut off. I went on my phone to check my Steam profile, and it said I was offline, so basically everything turned off. My monitor was still showing the picture of the moment in which it froze, and my computer was still on. I held the power button and rebooted, and now it's fine. Everything is working perfectly, and I have no idea what it was because it has never happened before. Does anyone know what the problem could be? I'm running Windows 8 with all updated drivers, if that comes in handy.

Intel Core i5 4670 @3.4 ghz (default clock)
NVIDIA (MSI) GeForce GTX 660 2GB Twin Frozr III
MSI Z87-G41 (Motherboard)
8GB Corsair RAM
1TB SATA-III
Asetek 510LC Liquid Cooling System 120MM Radiator (pre-filled)
Corsair CX500 500W 80 PLUS BRONZE

Computer is about 8 months old.

Do you have good airflow through your case to cool your VRMs? Does the PSU get enough cool air? The Corsair CX is made with inferior Samxon capacitors that cannot take heat and fail early. Eight months doesn't seem like enough time, but if this problem recurs, that could be the cause. Play some more and see if it happens again.

My computer is in a small corner, so it's a possibility that the PSU is not getting enough air-flow... plus, my room is always hot since the AC in our living room barely cools my room at all, and it's summer so could be a possibility, although I game about 7 hours everyday, playing some pretty hardcore games like Skyrim with ENB and other mods, and nothing has happened until today, as I was playing RIFT, a pretty low-end game. I will certainly keep gaming to see if anything else happens.

Thanks!

If it happens again, you might check for dust buildup that can cause overheating. Clean it out with a can of pressurized gas, never a vacuum cleaner (which can produce destructive static). Reseat your RAM and run memtest86+ to rule out a RAM problem. If none of that helps, you might need to replace the PSU. Do check the other stuff first though, before spending money.
